Answers to Some Important Questions About Orthodontics
Q: At what age should I take my child to see Dr. Gorczyca?
A: We recommend bringing children to see Dr. Gorczyca at age seven for an early check-up. There is no charge for this visit. We do see very young children at 5 years old with anterior crossbites with functional shifts.
Q: How would I know if I or my children need braces?
A: Major gaps between teeth, or teeth that are crowded, turned or protruding are the most common warning signs that a person might need orthodontic treatment. But sometimes the need for braces isn't that obvious. When teeth don't come together properly, they can wear unevenly, causing distortion or instability of the bite. Malfunctions of the jaw joint can also be signaled by chronic pain of the head, shoulder, and/or neck, ringing in the ears or dizziness.
Q: What are some of the long term benefits of orthodontics?
A: Braces can help enhance a person's appearance which, in turn, can improve his/her self-esteem and confidence. By putting teeth into proper alignment, treatment can also help relieve some types of dental or facial pain, and improve overall oral health- which can prevent future tooth decay, gum disease, and even tooth loss.
Q: Are all braces the same?
A: Braces are smaller and less noticeable today than they were years ago. Dr. Gorczyca offers customized InsigniaTM, DamonTM, In-OvationTM, and Invisalign® options as well as clear, silver, and gold braces with color ties.
Q: Are braces uncomfortable?
A: Today's braces are designed with patient comfort in mind. The brackets are small, with curved, rounded edges that are less likely to irritate the cheeks and tongue. Also, the archwires which align the teeth exert soft, gentle forces causing little discomfort. There's always an adjustment period when braces are first placed, but any discomfort usually passes within 48 hours.
Q: How long does treatment usually last?
A: Every case is unique. Some conditions can be corrected quickly. Others, such as cases in which teeth need to be removed and spaces closed, can take longer. For most teenagers and adults the average treatment time is 21 months.
Q: Is orthodontic treatment expensive?
A: Dr. Gorczyca offers no-interest payment plans to make treatment affordable. That, plus insurance coverage, can make braces a lot less costly than you might imagine. When you consider all the long-term benefits of orthodontics, it's a very wise investment to make. Ask our Treatment Coordinator, Denise, about our payment plans.
