Is Your Bite A High Performance Chewing Machine?

October 13th, 2014

LIKE COGS ON A WHEEL, teeth are made to fit together. With a good bite (occlusion), you can eat your food with the fewest chewing strokes possible. Your food is mashed by your teeth and when soft enough to swallow, you swallow it. This is how you eat.

If your upper and lower back teeth have spaces between them when you bite, you take longer to chew your food.

A Misaligned Bite Can Create Numerous Problems

This bite is called a Class II malocclusion (mal=bad, occlusion=bite). The upper teeth here are 5 millimeters forward of where they should meet the lower teeth giving the appearance of open black spaces. Teeth that only meet at the tips (cusps) wear flat. Tooth wear will create tooth sensitivity to heat and cold.

When upper and lower midlines are not centered, your bite is not healthy. It is a sign that your bite is off.

Effective Orthodontic Treatment Is About More Than Straight Teeth

Front teeth may look straight, but you may still have a destructive unhealthy bite. This is why orthodontics is more than six straight front teeth. It is important to be examined and treated by an orthodontist for the healthiest bite possible.

Orthodontic Rubber Bands Help Us Correct Malocclusion

Front to back bite correction is made with orthodontic rubber bands. These rubber bands move upper and lower teeth towards each other 1 millimeter per month and make the tooth tips fit properly. You need to wear your rubber bands 24 hours per day, 7 days per week to complete your orthodontic treatment as fast as possible.

This treatment took 23 months. Two years is often the treatment time needed for a healthy bite result produced by an orthodontist.

Mystery of the Missing Tooth at Downing Street

October 8th, 2014

THE YEAR IS 1997. The place is Whitehall, Central London. At age 43, the youngest Prime Minister since Lord Liverpool of 1812 emerges from 10 Downing Street to make his first official appearance and announce his manifesto to an adoring crowd.

But There’s A Mystery To Be Solved...

Where is Tony Blair’s lower tooth?

Upon closer examination, an astute and logical orthodontist deduces that Tony Blair’s lower tooth is significantly crowded out of the dental arch. This tooth is pushed towards his tongue giving him the appearance of a missing tooth.

More significant, if left untreated, his lower teeth will continue to crowd giving him the appearance of the oldest Prime Minister in British History, Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston, age 71.

It’s Simple To Fix...

Significant lower tooth crowding can be simple for you to fix with orthodontic treatment.

If there is excessive lower front tooth width (Bolton Discrepancy), one lower tooth may be removed to restore straightness and give you the appearance of a beautiful smile.

Make Room For A Beautiful Smile

No one up close or in a crowd will ever notice that one of your lower teeth has been removed. Only your orthodontist or dentist will know for sure.

Talk To Us About What Orthodontic Treatment Can Do For Your Smile

Let your teeth help you look your age or younger. Consider orthodontic treatment today and straighten your lower front teeth. Help your teeth look young, like the youngest British Prime Minister in History, William Pitt the Young, 1783, age 24.

Orthodontic Camouflage of Class III Skeletal Malocclusion

September 29th, 2014

NATURE’S DENTAL CAMOUFLAGE or “dental compensation for a skeletal discrepancy” occurs often in patients with crowded teeth where upper and lower jaws don’t match.

Short-Term Treatment Won’t Solve The Real Problem

If one jaw has tooth crowding and the other spacing, you may already have nature’s dental camouflage. Your teeth may not stick out. However, with simple front tooth alignment with a short term orthodontic treatment only, your teeth would stick out. That’s why short term orthodontics is not a good solution to your problem.

Should you align only your front teeth with short term braces, your jaw mismatch will become more obvious, your teeth will become more protrusive, and you may look much, much worse. Short term straightening will also worsen your bite and make tooth wear and jaw function a problem. You may be told by an orthodontist that you need either jaw surgery or tooth extraction to treat your bite properly. Your treatment also will take twelve to twenty four months.

Extraction Can Produce An Excellent Solution

Surgery with non-extraction is often your fastest treatment option for an ideal result. Other times, extraction can produce an excellent tooth function and appearance. Extraction alone for skeletal jaw mismatch is considered orthodontic camouflage.

Extraction for a big lower jaw with crowding commonly includes removal of both right and left lower first bicuspids. In this case, even with the lower midline initially off, two lower first biscupid teeth were extracted for a excellent result. This excellent result includes facial and tooth symmetry, proper front tooth bite function and proper back tooth grinding function. Most often, extraction of only one biscuspid would not give a symmetrical result with ideal bite function and is therefore usually not favorable.

Memories of My Orthodontist, Dr. Lawrence Oliveira

September 22nd, 2014

IT’S HARD TO APPRECIATE the influence one may have on a young person’s life. I am so thankful for the influence my orthodontist, Dr. Lawrence Oliveria of New Bedford, Massachusetts had on mine. He gave me the inspiration to become an orthodontist.

Dr. Oliveria Was A Very Cool Guy...

He was nice, handsome, always smelled good, talked to me, and even sent me a birthday card. He was a very good person. His brother was Monsigneur at my confirmation. His sister was one of my mother’s best friends. Adding to his coolness was his Corvette convertible, exactly like Barbie’s, except in silver. For a twelve year old, these things went a long way.

There was one funny thing about Dr. Oliveira’s office. His mother was his receptionist. She was a wonderful lady, friendly and kind. But every so often, she would let her motherhood shine threw and say something like, "Larry, get over here!" It was hard for me to understand then that my orthodontist was also once a kid.

My mother told me that Dr. Oliveria remodeled his mother’s kitchen. Having received this subliminal hint, once I became an orthodontist, I felt compelled to also remodel my mother’s kitchen! I am very thankful I was able to do that while she was still with us.

I Was So Excited About My Results

I loved the orthodontic result that Dr. Oliveria gave me. It changed my life. It may surprise you that I was not always a good orthodontic patient. Once, I went to the amusement park with my friends and bit into a candy apple. All my front braces broke off! Dr. Oliveira was so mad that he could hardly speak! Then I did the unthinkable. I wrapped my retainers in paper towels and my mother threw them away. Now both my orthodontist and my mother were mad at me!

In My Book, I Write...

In my new book, It All Starts with Marketing- 201 Marketing Tips for Growing a Dental Practice, I write:

“As a child, I loved my orthodontist and his office. It may surprise you that what impressed me most was his fish tank.”

Yes, he had a beautiful fish tank. It had salt water, yellow and blue fish, and even a “Nemo.” It was the most beautiful fish tank I had ever seen.

Forty years later, my orthodontist’s son, Dr. Neil Oliveira, has taken over his practice. I hope he still has the fish tank. I never truly had the opportunity to thank my orthodontist. Here’s to you, Dr. Lawrence Oliveria, from Ann Marie.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
