From Highway 4, take the Hillcrest Exit and continue right until you cross Lone Tree Way. After crossing Lone Tree Way, take the second entrance on the left at the Miranda stop light. Turn left and proceed right to the square, three-story building nextdoor to the Antioch Veterinary Hospital. Gorczyca Orthodontics is located on the first floor, right at the main entrance.

Our centralized location and easy Highway 4 access makes us easily accessible to serving all of East Contra Costa County including Antioch, Oakley, Brentwood, Pittsburg, Discovery Bay, Concord, and Rio Vista. We are a one-doctor, one-location orthodontic practice, so you will always find us here, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

A SPACE BETWEEN front teeth is very common. It called a diastema. Diastemas are often caused by thick tissue between the front teeth. This skin keeps your teeth apart and is called a maxillary frenum. Thick frenums are often hereditary and can be common in families.

How Do You Correct A Diastema?

A diastema is easy to close with orthodontic treatment. Short-term treatment may be braces, Invisalign, aligners, or removal appliances. Additional therapies may be required for ideal cosmetic results after closing a diastema. These may include veneers, lumineers, composites, or crowns. Periodontal therapy for removal of tissue, a frenectomy or gingivectomy, is often needed to help the space stay closed permanently after closing a diastema.

We Ensure The Gap Stays Closed

Your orthodontist may place a wire behind your front teeth to insure that your diastema stays closed. This bonded lingual wire is a permanent retainer. Care must be given not to bite hard foods with your permanent retainer to prevent it from breaking.

WHAT IF SOMEONE HAD done short-term ortho on Jackie O?

The result would have been hideous. An obvious Class II Division 2 skeletal malocclusion, if a dental care provider had straightened Jackie O's tipped in and crowded upper front teeth without surgery or extractions she would have ended up looking like Bart Simpson.

This is something a real orthodontist would never do. Yet, primary providers, uneducated in orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning, offer short term orthodontic treatment with braces or Invisalign to skeletal Class II patients without correcting the underlying skeletal problem.

Short-term Orthodontic Treatment May Reveal Other Issues

Straightening of severely tipped and crowded upper front teeth in a Class II Division 2 bite actually unmasks the horizontal jaw discrepancy giving these patients a new appearance of "buck teeth" following short-term ortho.

If left without moving the lower jaw forward or upper tooth extraction, non-correction of the underlying skeletal problem leads to many new problems including:

• Poor facial appearance
• Lip incompetence, open lips
• Lip biting
• Speech problems
• Front tooth display at rest
• Increased risk of front tooth trauma
• Lower tooth overeruption
• Upper palate biting
• Impinging deep bite
• Poor bite
• Excessive tooth wear

Correcting Short-term Ortho Mistakes Can Be Costly

Once the severe overjet and overbite is worsened by short term ortho, most patients seek orthodontic correction with an orthodontist. Unfortunately, many of these patients have already paid $4,500 to a provider of short term ortho. Now, a real orthodontist must tell the patient that their orthodontic treatment must be redone correctly for an additional cost of $7,000. This is a very unfortunate and uncomfortable situation.

Patients are being hurt physically, emotionally, and financially by not getting initial diagnosis and treatment by an orthodontist. Once this happens, trust in the primary provider of short-term ortho is gone forever.

NATURE’S DENTAL CAMOUFLAGE or “dental compensation for a skeletal discrepancy” occurs often in patients with crowded teeth where upper and lower jaws don’t match.

Short-Term Treatment Won’t Solve The Real Problem

If one jaw has tooth crowding and the other spacing, you may already have nature’s dental camouflage. Your teeth may not stick out. However, with simple front tooth alignment with a short term orthodontic treatment only, your teeth would stick out. That’s why short term orthodontics is not a good solution to your problem.

Should you align only your front teeth with short term braces, your jaw mismatch will become more obvious, your teeth will become more protrusive, and you may look much, much worse. Short term straightening will also worsen your bite and make tooth wear and jaw function a problem. You may be told by an orthodontist that you need either jaw surgery or tooth extraction to treat your bite properly. Your treatment also will take twelve to twenty four months.

Extraction Can Produce An Excellent Solution

Surgery with non-extraction is often your fastest treatment option for an ideal result. Other times, extraction can produce an excellent tooth function and appearance. Extraction alone for skeletal jaw mismatch is considered orthodontic camouflage.

Extraction for a big lower jaw with crowding commonly includes removal of both right and left lower first bicuspids. In this case, even with the lower midline initially off, two lower first biscupid teeth were extracted for a excellent result. This excellent result includes facial and tooth symmetry, proper front tooth bite function and proper back tooth grinding function. Most often, extraction of only one biscuspid would not give a symmetrical result with ideal bite function and is therefore usually not favorable.
